Iren Sweetwater Site
Sweetwater: the two-site 2 GW development, energized substation, 300 MW construction phase and conditional Batch Zero status.
In this article
Sweetwater is a large development programme built around two power-linked sites in West Texas. Its scale attracts attention, but the latest evidence is more specific than a headline about a 2 GW AI campus: Sweetwater 1's high-voltage substation has been energized, a 300 MW gross data-center phase is under construction, and the two-site hub has conditional inclusion in ERCOT's Batch Zero process.
Those developments remove or advance different dependencies. They do not establish that the full 2 GW is operating, equipped with GPUs or accepted by customers. Understanding the project requires following those stages separately.
Use the IREN infrastructure overview for the entire network and the IREN Data Center Tracker for the individual locations and source dates.
Two sites inside one hub
Sweetwater 1 accounts for 1,400 MW and Sweetwater 2 for 600 MW of planned gross power. They add to the 2,000 MW hub figure; the hub is not a third project to add again. IREN's facility page describes a combined 2,200 acres, split between approximately 1,700 acres at Sweetwater 1 and 500 acres at Sweetwater 2. Sweetwater facility specifications.
The same page includes a potential GPU capacity description. That is a design-scale claim, not an inventory of installed equipment. Different generations and configurations of hardware draw different amounts of power, so the electrical envelope alone cannot establish a realized machine count.
The distinction is especially important at a development of this size. A large site can be built and commercialized in phases. The development rights and power arrangements create room for those phases, while each completed deployment still needs buildings, cooling, equipment, networking and customer acceptance.
Energization has occurred at Sweetwater 1
IREN announced Sweetwater 1 substation energization in May 2026, and its September 8 update confirmed that the high-voltage substation had been energized earlier in the year. Any remaining undated marketing language about preparing for that event is behind the dated company announcement. Sweetwater's September update.
An energized substation is an important piece of electrical infrastructure. It does not mean every data hall behind it is complete or that the entire connection is carrying customer computing. The September release identifies 300 MW gross of data-center construction at Sweetwater 1, with delivery targeted for the fourth quarter of 2027. That phase is the concrete construction scope to follow, rather than treating all 1,400 MW as one completed installation.
What conditional Batch Zero inclusion means
The September announcement says Sweetwater 1 and Sweetwater 2 were conditionally included as Base Load in ERCOT's Batch Zero process. The company explicitly retained the conditional status and the need for ongoing approval processes. This is a grid-process milestone attached to the existing hub, not a newly disclosed campus or unconditional permission to operate every future phase.
The company also referred to other large projects included in Batch Zero, saying they would join its announced development portfolio after the relevant grid connection agreements were executed. Those unnamed projects cannot be assigned to Sweetwater or counted as additional announced capacity solely from that statement.
For readers, the useful sequence is power and grid rights, physical electrical infrastructure, data-center construction, installed computing equipment, commissioning and accepted customer service. Progress at one step can be significant without implying that the later steps have already happened.
The delivery and commercial questions
The 2027 target for the current construction phase remains a company plan. Completion requires the supporting systems to arrive and work together. It also requires the commercial arrangement to match the delivered configuration. A campus marketed for AI use does not by itself establish a signed tenant allocation or an operating cloud-revenue stream.
That is why Sweetwater should be compared carefully with Childress. Childress has a specifically announced customer acceptance at Horizon 1. Sweetwater's current evidence concerns grid status, energization and construction. They are both important to IREN, but they occupy different places in the delivery sequence.
What to watch from here
The next informative disclosures would clarify construction progress for the 300 MW gross phase, customer commitments, equipment and commissioning plans, and any change in the conditional grid classification. Sweetwater 2 also needs its own achieved milestones; a development schedule at one site should not be presented as completion at the other.
The project's attraction is the scale of the electrical opportunity. Its value as usable computing infrastructure will be established in smaller, verifiable stages.
