How Does Robinhood Make Money?
How Robinhood makes money: Q2 2026 revenue categories, trading mix, interest sensitivity, Gold, advisory and bank-partner services.
In this article
Robinhood earns money through transactions, interest-related activities and other services, including Gold subscriptions. Its product range has broadened, but trading remains the largest reported revenue category. Understanding the business requires connecting each product to the financial statements rather than treating every new feature as an equally large earnings engine.
The latest quarter provides a useful baseline. Robinhood reported approximately $1.31 billion in net revenue for Q2 2026, with growth across its three reporting categories and different trends within trading.
The reported revenue mix
Reporting category | Q2 2026 revenue |
|---|---|
Transaction-based revenue | $776 million |
Net interest revenue | $389 million |
Other revenue | $143 million |
Total | $1.308 billion |
Source: Robinhood's Q2 2026 results. The rounded headline is $1.31 billion. Transaction revenue represented roughly 59% of the total, calculated from the disclosed figures.
The mix demonstrates diversification, but it does not support dismissing the effect of lower trading activity. The largest revenue stream is still sensitive to customer activity and the economics of each product.
Trading is several businesses
Within transaction revenue, options contributed $342 million, event contracts $156 million, equities $129 million and cryptocurrencies $100 million. Crypto revenue was lower than a year earlier even as other major trading categories grew.
That difference matters. A broad increase in platform revenue can conceal weaker performance in one product, and a decline in crypto does not automatically imply that every trading category is shrinking. Volumes, customer behaviour, pricing and market structure all influence the result.
Event contracts are also subject to their own fees and regulatory framework. Robinhood's current fee explanation describes probability-weighted commissions from June 2026. A volume count alone is therefore not a complete revenue model.
Interest revenue depends on balances and rates
Robinhood reported $389 million of net interest revenue. Growth in interest-earning assets helped the quarter, while lower short-term rates and securities-lending activity offset part of that benefit.
The mechanism differs from transaction revenue: balances and yields can matter more than the number of trades. But this does not make interest income insensitive to markets. Rates, customer cash allocation, margin borrowing, funding costs and lending activity can all change.
Customer assets held on the platform are not Robinhood's unrestricted corporate cash. The distinction is essential when moving from a platform growth metric to a balance-sheet or valuation analysis.
Gold creates recurring revenue, with costs attached
Gold reached 4.8 million subscribers in the latest quarter. Subscription income can add a recurring component, while benefits are intended to encourage deeper use of the platform.
Gold is not the entirety of the $143 million other-revenue category. The results also identify Trump Account service revenue among its drivers. Treating the whole category as subscriptions would overstate that business.
A subscription is also a bundle with associated costs. Subscriber growth is useful evidence of adoption, but the financial contribution depends on the revenue retained after providing benefits and serving customers. Engagement and retention should be measured rather than assumed.
Advisory, banking and credit expand the relationship
Robinhood Strategies adds managed investing. The latest company update reports more than 300,000 funded Strategies customers and nearly $2 billion under management to date. Its fee structure includes a qualifying Gold cap, so assets do not translate into revenue at one uniform rate.
Robinhood Banking is offered through Robinhood Money with banking services from Coastal Community Bank and a sweep network. Robinhood Money is not an FDIC-insured bank. Deposit insurance applies under the partner arrangements and conditions, not as blanket protection for every investment in the app.
Credit cards introduce spending revenue and credit exposure. Mortgage offers also need accurate attribution: Gold's published benefits include offers through Sage Home Loans. That is not evidence that Robinhood itself holds a large mortgage lending book or automatically retains the customer's mortgage relationship for decades.
A broader platform still has correlated risks
More products can reduce reliance on a single source of activity. They can also share exposure to household finances, asset prices and confidence in the platform. Lower markets may affect trading, asset-based fees and customer borrowing at the same time.
The great wealth transfer creates a potential long-term customer opportunity. It does not establish how much inherited wealth Robinhood will attract or retain. Net deposits, product use, costs and customer outcomes are more useful evidence than assuming a generational demographic trend guarantees market share.
